Designation as a Historic District and National Historic Site of Canada
The Government of Canada commemorates this country's human history though its National Historic Sites and Districts program by awarding these designations to what are considered tangible and irreplaceable links to the past. This program is based on an acknowledged awareness that a strong and secure sense of the past is an indispensable source of confidence in the future, particularly for a country that is "outward-looking by choice and independent by conviction". Designated sites provide tangible and irreplaceable links to what defines Canada as a nation and a people viewed as being integral to "our sense of country" along with other national institutions and symbols of historic value.

A proposal to designate Battle Harbour as a National Historic Site of Canada was submitted to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board (HSMB) in 1995 based on the site's significance as the last intact example of a mercantile Room representing the traditional Labrador fisheries. In awarding this designation the HSMB recommended that an additional assessment be undertaken on settlement for possible consideration as a National Historic District of Canada based on the importance of the settlement's cultural landscape - i.e. the cultural and natural resources of a geographic area associated with the historic activities of the Labrador fishery. In 1997 the HSMB designated Battle Harbour as a Historic District.

Approximately 700 sites are managed and operated by organizations independent of the Government of Canada's family of National Historic Sites and Districts operated by Parks Canada.
