Battle Harbour Historic Trust Inc
Who We Are
The not-for-profit company known as Battle Harbour Historic Trust (BHHT) Inc. was founded in 1990 to accept the very generous donation of property rights made by the Earle Freighting Services Ltd of Carbonear for the mercantile properties known as Battle Harbour, Labrador. A 14 member volunteer Board governs the company and three seats are held by representatives from communities where former Battle Harbour residents now live. Responsibility for day-to-day business decisions is vested with the volunteer Chair and Managing Director.

Our Beliefs & Values
Volunteers and staff alike firmly believe that the pristine environment, cultural legacy and built heritage that make up Battle Harbour are important icons of the very roots of why this place we call home exists. Like the pioneers who settled the land and struggled for survival in Canada's west, the people for came from the west country of England to set up Labrador fishing stations struggled to exist on the very edge of the harsh North Atlantic.

Staff and volunteers care about preserving the memories of those who went before them. We believe it is important to remember and celebrate all contributions to today's life-style at this National Historic Site - the European merchants, settlers and planters, the floaters and stationers from Conception Bay and other harbour, tickles island and coves throughout Newfoundland and of course the aboriginal peoples who preceded all of them and us.

What We Do
As stewards for the last intact example of Labrador's mercantile fishery rooms, BHHT Inc operates and maintains the living commemoration of the centuries old Labrador fishery based life and society created at Battle Harbour by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians floaters, stationers and livyers during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries

Our Logo
One of the artefacts discovered by BHHT volunteers when the site was first acquired was an oval stencil used by the merchant firm which owned Battle Harbour from 1871 through to 1955, the Baine Johnston & Co., Ltd of St. John's. This firm's name appeared in the oval and ochre coloured paint was use to stencil this mark on the barrels, boxes and other containers of Labrador fish shipped from Battle Harbour each season to ports primarily in Newfoundland, Spain and Portugal. This symbolic link to the past was chosen as the foundation for BHHT Inc's logo with the salt fish inside representing the most well-known and abundant product of the settlement's initial fisheries.
