Bartlett Celebrations - Port of Call Activities July 29th and 30th
The province has marked 2009 as the year to celebrate the accomplishments of internationally renown Arctic explorer Captain Robert Bartlett (Captain Bob). - the Bartlett Celebrations http://www.bartlett2009.com/main.asp organized by the Historic Sites Assocation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
As part of the Bartlett Celebration, Battle Harbour has been selected as one of the 12 ports of call for the SS Bowdoin and will be hosting several events.
Tour and/or Sail on the SS Bowdoin
This historic ship, one of the last Arctic schooners from the polar exploration era, is expected to sail into Battle Harbour on Fun Day, July 29th after the passenger ferry arrives from Mary's Harbour. Visitors will have the opportunity to take a tour onboard this Official Vessel of the State of Maine between 2 and 5pm on arrival day.
Tours will also be offered on July 30th, and weather permitting, short sailing trips around Battle Island. Passengers will be selected each day by a ticket draw as the Bowdoin's capacity is limited to 20.
"Sea & Ice the Extraordinary Life of Captain Bob Bartlett"
A travelling exhibit featuring Bartlett's life and career through stories and themes from the era of Arctic exploration in the first half of the 20th century. This exibit will be located in the Salt Store and special interperters, who are travelling with the exhibit, will be on hand to answer questions during hours posted for July 29th and July 30th.
Drama Productions with Captain Bob
Visitors can take in one or both drama productions during which "Captain Bob, himself" will share stories of some of his greatest adventures. The July 29th drama will take place in the Salt Store at approximately 5:15 pm while the July 30th activity will be held in St. James the Apostle Anglican Church at approximately 2:30pm.
Traditional Music Concert & Performance (July 29 only)
Well-known musicians Jim Payne and Fergus O'Byrne will be performing at 9pm in St. James the Apostle Anglican Church. This duo's combined instrumental prowess and humorous repartee includes rousing sea shanties and work songs, poignant ballads, comic ditties, folk tales and recitations, and toe-tapping jigs, reels and polkas on a variety of instruments.

Replicas of two hand hooked mats that were used in St James the in the early 1930s are being completed by volunteers from the Newfoundland Rug Hooking Guild http://www.rhgnl.ca
Ribbon Cutting Captain Bob's at Battle Harbour Interpretative Panel
A permanent exhibit for the Salt Store Loft explaining Bartlett's connection to Battle Harbour and a complementary piece to the existing display commemorating Captain Bob's work with Robert E. Peary and his famous trip 1909 discovery of the North Pole.
Lecture on "Life and Times of Captain Robert Bartlett"
To be performed in Salmon Store Loft by distinguished Newfoundlander and followed by a "Labrador Time" with entertainment provided by staff,ships crew and any others inclined to play a tune, sign a song, share a recitation.
Port of Call Funding Campaign
BHHT Inc is seeking donations towards its "Port of Call" activities. Total project costs are $8,000 and we are seeking $4,000 in donations by April 30, 2009. Donations can be made using credit cards through Canada Helps button below and additional information is available by email at information@battleharbour.com Tax receipts are available from BHHT Inc as a registered Canadian charity and issued directly by CanadaHelps when funds are donated online or by BHHT Inc once a year in Febuary.

Bartlett's Run Flotilla
Pleasure boaters and would be Arctic explorers are invited to join a 2009 flotilla heading for Battle Harbour in time to rendevous with the SS Bowdoin and participate in the Bartlett Celebrations being held at this port of call.
The flotilla will leave Conception Bay Newfoundland on or about July 25th, joined by other boats and yachts travelling from marinas and yacht clubs along the northern coast of Newfoundland, and arrive in Battle Harbour on Tuesday July 28th ahead of the SS Bowdoin and in time to join in Fun Day and other Bartlett Celebration Port of Call activities.

Some Acommodation Still Available... July 28, 29 and 30th
As of July 18, 2009, the Spearing Cottage, and some rooms in the Battle Harbour Inn and Grenfell Cottage are still available for the dates referenced plus some bunks in the Cookhouse/Bunkhouse.
Day trippers are welcome to come visit Battle Island every day and the more the merrier on Fun Day (July 29) and for the Bartlett Port of Call Celebrations (mid day July 29th through to evening of July 30th).
The passenger ferry, MV Iceberg Hunter will depart from Mary's Harbour at 11am and 6pm daily. The ferry can take 46 passengers and preference will be given to guests holding overnight reservations.
Staff are exploring other options for individuals wishing to travel to Battle Island for the day who are unable to travel on the scheduled passenger ferry crossings. Please leave your name, contact information and number of people who wish to travel with Annette at our Visitor Information Centre and Ferry Terminal, Mary's Harbour 921-6325
